Ah, the mature Tinto Brass! After twenty odd years of trying to make difficult, compelling and erotic films, of seeing his work cut to shreds by clumsier, less artistic hands, of working on huge sets with vast unweildy international casts and of the insufferable dictation of linear narrative and intelligible dialogue enough was enough. From now on it would be back to basics, back to his first love. From now on all of his films would be about women with fat arses. Like Walerian Boroczyk or Russ Meyer ( albeit a Russ Meyer who is a foot shorter and facing the wrong way ) Brass' chief concern is the capture of the female form, as often as possible and from suprisingly intrusive angles. To this end he has established a series of erotic props, his own sexual shorthand. There will always be an oval mirror over any bed, there will invariably be a camp dancing sequence during which the heroine will feel compelled to flash her baggy french knickers. There will be a dream sequence, usually on a beach and usually as a tribute to Fellini, and every time a character goes to the cinema it will be to see another Tinto Brass film. And finally, and perhaps most importantly for Tinto, any woman, no matter what the circumstances and appropos of nothing must be allowed to urinate as and when she pleases, preferably backlit and preferably in public. This is the plot of Miranda. Not in essence, this is not a thumbnail sketch or a five word pitch. THIS IS ALL THAT HAPPENS:Miranda ( Serena Grandi ) the landlady of an Italian taverna has to choose between three men: a rich pensioner, an aggressive GI or the lowly waiter who carries a torch for her. Guess which one she goes for!

Action (1980) Tinto brass

Set and seemingly part-shot in London, it offers not one iota of English culture. It's very much Italian - lots of noisy jabbering and angry gesticulating. The 'story' follows an idealistic actor who goes on a strange odyssey in which he meets various bizarre types. That's pretty much it.

Some of the weird and ludicrous scenes: an actress is forced to defecate on set or be thrown off, so men cajole her into doing so; half naked mental patients sing a song with the staff; men with penises for noses and women with cooches for mouths dance in a field. And it's all so utterly meaningless!

This being Tinto Brass there is nudity but the ladies are not shot in his usual loving fashion and there are no lingering vulva shots or upskirt shots. For those interested, here are the sexy scenes available: a woman climbs out of a bath slowly (breasts and bush), a woman pulls her skirt up and panties down (bush) to sit on the loo; a woman dances around wearing only hold ups (boobs, fur); a woman climbs out of a taxi in just hold ups (again boobs and fur); a woman dances completely naked in a field; a couple dance naked in a field.

You may have to see this to realise how bad it is. The dialogue is bathetic, cod philosophical nonsense, and the director displays zero skill in keeping a narrative together. The actors are bad and unattractive.

Quite a mess indeed, and not yet available on R2 DVD. It might struggle to get approval from the BBFC (partly because of the unpleasant and misogynistic toilet scene) but might sneak an 18.

Tinto Brass - Snack Bar Budapest (1988)

I like Tinto Brass. More accurately, I suppose, I should say that I enjoy Tinto Brass films. But even then I must qualify that. Mr Brass is a very skilled film maker. Possibly some of his movies look like MTV but he likes that glossy look with lots of neon and classy sets. He also knows how to shoot women. Some may consider it demeaning but he knows how to get women to bend this way and that to their best advantage and always make it look as if they are enjoying themselves. What, it appears, even he cannot do, is tell a proper story and still get away with women bending all the time. This starts off fine with some great glamour shots and some silly story developing, lots more sexy bending and then somewhere along the way it becomes clear we are supposed to be really interested in the fate of some of these people on screen , who all of a sudden are not bending over so much. It is a nonsense story that spoils the fun. There is a belated and rather tasteless effort to get back to some T&A at the end with some eroticised shots of a dead girl but all is already well lost.

Pure Decadence, In WW2 Germany, Gestapo officers spy on their own soldiers at a brothel to make sure they don't turn against the Fuhrer. Thulin and Berger are reunited after playing mother and son in "The Damned," cementing their places in the Decadence Hall of Shame. Thulin vamps through three songs, which is at least three too many. As one would expect from Brass, there is ample display of flesh. Savoy is an idealistic young woman with naked ambitions (well, naked anyway). The film is trashy fun as long as it is focusing on the salacious activities of those naughty Nazis. However, Brass decides to throw in some messages about love and war, making the film drag somewhat and go on too long.
